When the hot water stops, most people brace for the cost of a brand-new water heater. Sometimes that’s the right call. But not always. On a recent visit to a home in Alamo Ranch (78254), one part was all it took to get a family’s hot water back.
What happened at this Alamo Ranch home
The family has a 50-gallon natural gas tank water heater from A. O. Smith. The gas control valve, the part on the front of the tank that runs the burner and pilot, had stopped doing its job. The homeowner had already bought a replacement valve, and we were happy to install the part they had on hand.
Our plumber shut off the gas, took out the old control valve and put in the new Resideo valve. Then he reconnected the gas line, the pilot tube and the burner supply, relit the pilot, and made sure the water heater was running properly before he left. No new tank needed.

Signs your water heater needs a plumber
You don’t need to figure out what’s wrong yourself. Just give us a call if you notice:
- No hot water, or hot water that runs out much faster than it used to.
- A status light on the front of the tank that keeps blinking.
- A pilot that won’t stay lit.
- Water pooling around the base of the tank.
- Popping or rumbling sounds when the heater runs.
One thing is always safe to do while you wait for us. If water is leaking, shut the water off at the meter box by the curb, which is where San Antonio homes get their water.
Repair or replace: how we help you decide
A lot of the time, a no-hot-water call comes down to one worn-out part, like the gas control valve on this Alamo Ranch heater. When the tank itself is in good shape, a repair can buy you more years of reliable hot water for far less than a new heater.
Other times, putting more money into an old heater doesn’t make sense. A tank that’s leaking can’t be patched, and an older heater that keeps needing repairs is often ready to retire. When that’s the case, we’ll walk you through your options, including a standard tank or a tankless heater for endless hot water, so you can choose what fits your home and your budget. A new water heater can cost around $2,800, so we’ll always tell you honestly when a repair is the smarter choice. And if replacement is the way to go, ask about our $500 off a new water heater special (tank or tankless; restrictions apply, can’t be combined with other offers).
Why hard water matters in San Antonio
San Antonio’s water is hard, so minerals settle at the bottom of every tank over time. That sediment makes a heater work harder and wear out sooner. A yearly flush helps your heater last. Our $79 water heater flush and full inspection is a good way to catch small problems before they turn into a no-hot-water morning (restrictions apply, can’t be combined with other offers).
