A dark stain on the master bathroom ceiling can make any homeowner worry about a hidden plumbing leak. On October 13, 2026, our team visited a home in the Alamo Ranch area of San Antonio (78254) for exactly that concern, plus a booked water heater flush and full inspection. Here is what we checked, what we found, and what we did for the water heater.
The Concern
The homeowner noticed dark discoloration on the master bathroom ceiling and wanted peace of mind that it was not a plumbing leak. They also booked our water heater flush with a full inspection, the same $79 special we offer on our specials page.

What We Found on the Ceiling Check
We checked the attic PEX plumbing above the bathroom and looked at the water meter. We did not find a plumbing leak. What we did flag was a gap around the roof jack, and we talked with the homeowner about possible exhaust or condensation contributing to the stain. Because the source was not confirmed as plumbing, we did not repair the ceiling stain. We recommended a roofer for the roof jack gap so the homeowner has a clear next step.
The Water Heater Flush and Full Inspection
San Antonio’s hard water leaves mineral sediment in every tank water heater. While we were there, we completed the booked flush and full inspection on the home’s gas water heater.

- Flushed the tank. We drained sediment from the water heater so hard-water minerals would not keep sitting at the bottom of the tank.
- Inspected the connections. We checked the draft hood, temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve piping, flex connectors, supply lines, and expansion tank.
- Exercised the ball shutoff. We opened and closed the heater’s ball shutoff valve so it stays free and ready if you ever need to shut the water off at the unit.

The Result
The homeowner got an honest answer on the ceiling stain: we found no plumbing leak, and we pointed them to a roofer for the roof jack gap. Their water heater was flushed of sediment, the connections were inspected, and the shutoff was exercised. Peace of mind on the stain, and a heater ready for cooler weather.
When a Ceiling Stain Might Not Be Plumbing
Not every ceiling stain is a pipe leak. Roof flashing gaps, exhaust vents, and condensation can leave marks that look a lot like a plumbing problem. If you see a new stain, it is still smart to have a plumber check the lines above and the meter, so you know whether it is our side of the house or something to hand to a roofer. If you ever have an active leak, shut the water off at the curbside meter box and call us.
